Oz

Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People in partnership with Vancouver’s Carousel Theatre for Young People presents Oz, a whimsical new production for young audiences and families.

This enchanting production imagines how L. Frank Baum came to pen his bestselling children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1899 Chicago—decades before the beloved MGM Movie Musical was even filmed!

Oz, a KTYP and CTYP production

Baum is struggling with writer’s block as he works to complete the manuscript while his housekeeper, Bridgey, and a playful young runaway named Dot get swept up in the frenetic creation of his tale—turning the writer’s Victorian era office upside-down in the process. They’re transported to a magical land where the author’s footstool becomes Toto and a birdcage, an overcoat, and a fire grate become the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Cowardly Lion. There are appearances by Toto and the Wicked Witch of the West too—just not entirely how you’re used to seeing them.

Oz premiered in Kansas City in 1994, and has played across the U.S. and at renowned London-based children’s theatre, Unicorn Theatre. After a successful run in Vancouver at Granville Island’s Waterfront Theatre,Oz comes to Victoria from March 30th through April 9th. This Canadian premiere production is directed by Jennica Grienke, with Stephen Thakkar as L. Frank Baum, Melanie Yeats as Bridgey, and Megan Zong as Dot.

With elements of live performance, storytelling, and imaginative play, Oz is a heartwarming celebration of the power of imagination and the importance of courage, brains, and heart. Oz features a set by Ryan Cormack, lighting by Victoria’s Rebekah Johnson, costumes by Donnie Tejani, props by Monica Emme, sound design by Mary Jane Coomber, and stage management by Taylor MacKinnon

Oz marks the first collaboration between BC based Theatre for Young Audience Companies Kaleidoscope and Carousel Theatre for Young People – the province’s only venue based creators of professional theatre for children and families.

Oz is suitable for children ages 6+. Advance tickets for public performances can be reserved online at kaleidoscope.bc.ca or by calling the Kaleidoscope Box Office at 250-900-8163.
