Kaleidoscope Returns to Live Performance with Whimsical Musical for Families

VICTORIA, BC - (August 16, 2021) - Victoria’s Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People returns to live in-person performance with an outdoor touring musical for children and families created by renowned Canadian Playwright, Tomson Highway.

The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito is a whimsical musical production that celebrates individuality and inclusion. Celebrated Cree author and playwright, Tomson Highway’s The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito follows an outcast mosquito girl from Manitoba who endures mocking and bullying at school. Finding her voice through songs enables her to make new friends and overcome her winglessness.

This musical show explores themes of feeling like an outsider, dealing with bullying, moving to a new place, and feeling different from what’s considered normal. Mary Jane’s tale unfolds through song and story, weaving music, song and Cree language into its storytelling.

Tomson Highway is a celebrated playwright, musician, novelist and author. He is known for his legendary texts that explore contemporary indigenous experiences and contribute to the work of reconciliation on a national level. His most awarded pieces; Rez Sisters, Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing and Kiss Of The Fur Queen continue to resonate with audiences across the country.

This brand new production from Victoria’s Kaleidoscope Theatre features Danica Charlie, a recent graduate of the Canadian College of Performing Arts, as Mary Jane Mosquito and is directed by Jessica Schacht. The creative team includes music direction and sound design by Aaron Smail, costume design by Alice Hawes, Set design by Patricia Reilly, vocal coaching by Anna Shill, Cree Language Coaching by Lyle John, and movement coaching by Andrea Lemus.

The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito plays August 28 through September 12 at parks around the Capital Region, including stops at Sidney’s Beacon Park, Brentwood Bay’s Pioneer Park, Colwood City Hall, and on the grounds of Government House in Victoria. The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito is presented for free and will perform to small audiences in outdoor settings. Advance tickets can be reserved online at kaleidoscope.bc.ca.

The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito is the first production in Kaleidoscope’s 48th Season of professional family entertainment. The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito is supported by the Victoria Foundation’s Community Recovery Program and the BC Arts Council.

Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People is Vancouver Island’s resident professional theatre company for young people and families. Established in 1973, Kaleidoscope has a mission to create original, innovative and relevant theatre experiences that stimulate and inspire young people to think critically about the world around them.
