Class Etiquette

Studying with a professional theatre company demands a great deal of self-discipline from young artists. So that everyone’s experience will be positive and rewarding we must set up standards of behaviour. Potential problems that arise in class can be avoided by letting everyone know at the outset what is expected of them. The following is a listing of behaviour that comprises class etiquette for Kaleidoscope’s Performing Arts Studio. It is expected each KPAS student will know, and abide by these rules:

Come to class prepared to work, physically, mentally and emotionally. Dress for movement each and every class. Make sure hair is out of the face unless otherwise told by the instructor.

  1. Be prompt. If you have a situation that will make you late/absent, we would appreciate a call so we can inform the instructor ahead of time.
  2. When the Instructor has stopped the class for any reason, wait still and quietly. Movement, talking and whispering is distracting. Be considerate of the instructor who has to think and make decisions.
  3. Food is not to be consumed during class time. If you bring a drink into the class, throw containers in the garbage or recycling when you are finished.
  4. Suitable breaks will be scheduled during which time snacks and beverages can be consumed when appropriate.
  5. Acknowledge fellow students or the Instructor when you feel they have done a good job or gone out of their way for you. Everyone, actor or teacher, child or adult, needs positive reinforcement.
  6. Good learning environments need teamwork; consider everyone as part of your team.
  7. When in class, but not the focus of instruction, do not talk, joke, whisper, or do anything that might disturb the other students and the Instructor.
  8. Do not chew gum in class.
  9. Do not play rehearsal pianos at any time.
  10. Clean up your own garbage and be available to help with general clean-up of class room and waiting areas.

Reviewing the above points occasionally is advisable. These standards are high but readily attainable. Such standards ensure we will enjoy our time together working on your theatre training!

Discipline Policy

We believe that the Studio is more about the kids than it is about rules and don’t expect to have to discipline your child. BUT we feel there must be a system in place to protect the integrity of the learning environment and keep parents informed of any concerns. For any serious failures to follow class etiquette, we will initiate the following steps: 1) on the first incident, the student will be given a verbal warning; 2) after the second incident, the student’s parent/guardian will be informed; 3) after the third incident, and after further discussion with the student’s parent/guardian, the student may be asked to leave the class.

Note to Parents

To assist student focus in class, parents are not allowed to observe or stay in the classroom, unless special permission has been arranged through the Instructor.

The Instructor will arrive at the class 10 minutes before start time, and stay up to 10 minutes afterwards for student supervision and consultation with parents. The Instructor is responsible for the safety and care of all students in their charge until released to a proper guardian and will not leave your child unattended. However, we know that you appreciate the Instructor is a busy professional, and deserves to be compensated fairly for his or her time. We will consider chronically late pick-ups of your child a request for individual coaching, and bill you at a rate of $50/hr for such.

The Instructor will not release a child into care of anyone other than a registered parent or guardian UNLESS prior arrangements have been made. If you have arranged for someone else to pick up your child, please let the Instructor know when you do drop off. Better yet, provide your instructor with an acceptable list off individuals who can pick up and we will keep this on file. (see attached forms)

If you are allowing your child (only children over 12 years of age) to find their own way home we require you to fill out a form (see attached) to waive the Instructor of responsibility for your child once the class is over.

Thank you for your understanding and compliance with these policies.
