This program is designed for young actors/singers who are continuing formal training. This class will advance the students’ skills with a supportive environment in which they may develop and combine vocal, acting, and movement techniques. Participants will explore elements such as monologues, scenes, improvisation, and group songs, as well as solo musical theatre pieces.

Jr. Musical Theatre

This program is designed for young actors to integrate musical story telling, movement, and character development. They will explore the basics of communicating emotion through song. For those students who have a passion for taking their natural musicality and story telling abilities to the next level, the skills gained will prepare them for more advanced approaches to this magical performance style.

Advanced Acting

This program is designed for those students that desire to be challenged beyond an introductory level. Building upon previous acting exercises, they will be introduced to monologue presentation, play analysis, character back-story, and gain a deeper understanding of emotional commitment to the art of performance.

Acting Up!

Developing your performance and acting skills is not only important for the future actor, but also essential for those who want to dance, sing, direct, write or just work with people. In this class, students will not only build their confidence level, but they will develop and move their acting abilities to a higher level. The class will expand the student’s skills into scripted work and character study, using theatrical games, improvisation, voice and creative movement. Each term, brings a different focus and a unique performance piece to showcase to family and friends during the final class.

Intro to Musical Theatre

Let’s sing it out loud and free! This class assists our young students in releasing their natural musicality. Using improvisation, rhythm and theatre games, your future musical theatre star will learn to interact and express in a fun filled environment. This class will help them to focus and prepare them to work together and begin to understand how song, movement and acting can combine for a magical release.

Acting Basics

This performance-based class is designed for the budding performer who wants to learn more about acting in a fun and comfortable group class setting. Improvisation, script work, voice, movement and theatre games make up this dynamic acting program. At the end of each term there will be an open class for parents and friends to share in the progress of each student.

Leslie Bland – Artistic Director

An award-winning director, actor, and playwright, Leslie has worked for many theatres across the country including the National Arts Centre, Theatre Calgary, the Citadel Theatre, Gateway Theatre, the Ottawa Children’s Festival, Chemainus Theatre, Stage Polaris, the Playwrights Theatre Centre, and Theatre Network among others.

Leslie is the Artistic Director of Victoria’s Kaleidoscope Theatre. During his time as AD, he has lead a renaissance of Kaleidoscope’s programming and profile in the community, setting attendance records for local in-house productions, winning and being nominated for awards (Outstanding Direction, Favourite Play, Outstanding Production for Young Audiences, Favourite Director), and touring its productions nationally and internationally.

He is a graduate of the University of Alberta B.F.A. Acting program, holds both his Instructor’s and Performer’s certification (A.R.C.T.) in Speech Arts and Drama with the Royal Conservatory of Music (University of Toronto), and received his M.F.A. in Directing from the University of Victoria.

Leslie was the co-founder and for 12 years was the Executive Producer of Edmonton’s Stage Polaris. During his time at Polaris, Leslie directed, performed, and produced over 100 professional productions and oversaw Polaris’ growth from an idea to becoming the second largest theatre company in Edmonton, with a budget of over 1 million dollars and an annual attendance in excess of 100,000.

Leslie has lectured by invitation on his theatrical activities in both New York and Washington D.C. He has taught at Concordia University in Montreal, the University of Miami, the Canadian College for Film and Acting as well as other theatrical institutions. He is currently a Sessional Instructor at the University of Victoria Theatre Department where he teaches Acting and Public Speaking.
