This year long program is for those students who share a passion for pursuing a career in the performing arts. Studies in theatre history, writing, directing, and acting technique will challenge the students to embrace an informed approach to classical and modern scripts and character building. From the absurdist’s to the contemporary, we will delve deeper into the challenges that the actor will face as they continue to expand their skills for a career in the arts, and encourage them to ‘step up ’and dare to risk. Limited enrollment ensures a focused instructor- student relationship dedicated to a firm commitment to learn. The student’s work will be highlighted and showcased at our year-end production.

Acting Basics

This performance-based class is designed for the budding performer who wants to learn more about acting in a fun and comfortable group class setting. Improvisation, script work, voice, movement and theatre games make up this dynamic acting program. Students will have an opportunity to share their creative work at a year-end showcase in a professional theatrical venue for family and friends!

Senior Advanced Acting

This course is a pre-requisite for those students planning to enter the Master Class program. Students will be challenged as they build their acting vocabulary, both physical and emotional. Work will continue with monologue presentation, play analysis, character back-story, and scene work from Shakespeare. Our year end showcase will provide our students with important stage presentation experience.

Hana’s Suitcase

In March 2000, a child’s suitcase arrived from Auschwitz at the Children’s Holocaust Centre in Tokyo. Painted on the side was the name “Hana Brady,” a birthdate and the word “Waisenkind” (German for “orphan”). Asked relentless questions by the children of the centre, curator Fumiko Ishioka embarked on a journey from Tokyo to Prague to Toronto, to uncover the fate of Hana and her family at the hand of the Nazis.

The Hobbit

The Hobbit is an adaptation of Tolkien’s classic story by Canadian playwright Kim Selody. Bilbo, the unadventurous hobbit, must overcome his fears to become the hero Gandalf believes him to be. Although the characters are at times assisted with magic, the true enchantment is found in the mind.

Lizzy is the tallest girl in her class, maybe even the whole school. What do you do when you’re in Grade 4, you don’t fit in, and your once best friend ignores you? You try to make yourself invisible. You don’t draw attention to yourself, you stay very still, so still your classmates won’t even know you’re there. Lizzy practices being invisible every day and she’s getting pretty good at it too, until one day right in the middle of gym class, she has the loudest, most gigantic sneeze EVER. A sneeze so loud and so big that Lizzy’s sneeze comes to life!

THE BIG SNEEZE, a hilarious yet poignant new play, follows the adventures of Lizzy (aided by her VOS – Very Own Sneeze) as she navigates the hallways of her grade school life, in all its challenges, learning that she’s not quite as different from her peers as she thinks.

Dealing with issues of self-esteem and peer relationships, THE BIG SNEEZE takes audiences on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

Cinderella

What could be better than a fairy tale, told in song?

This opera is full of lively tunes, fast-paced fun, comical characters and a few added surprises. Perfect for young audiences (kindergarten to grade 7), Cinderella is brought to life in an enchanting English adaptation of Rossini’s full length opera, La Cenerentola, one of many different versions of the Cinderella story. DuffleBag Theatre returns for another fun filled and hilarious season of interactive storytelling theatre. Since 1992, “the nearly world-famous” DuffleBag Theatre has wowed audiences of all ages in theatres, festivals and schools across the country.

In their hilarious and refreshing adaptation of Rumpelstiltskin, audience members are invited into the show to play the main parts! The resulting excitement and spontaneity creates an uproarious experience for all and forms a perfect introduction to traditional fairytales/folktales and the classics.

With Dufflebag Theatre, the dream of living a fairy tale actually does come true!

Sr. Musical Theatre

This program is designed for young actors/singers who are continuing formal training. This class will advance the students’ skills with a supportive environment in which they may develop and combine vocal, acting, and movement techniques. Participants will explore elements such as monologues, scenes, improvisation, and group songs, as well as solo musical theatre pieces.
