Pippi Longstocking: The Family Musical

Interview with Yanik Giroux

We sat down with Yanik Giroux, our Music Director for  Kaleidoscope’s Pippi Longstocking: The Family Musical coming to the McPherson Playhouse, December 28-30, 2018.

We asked Yanik a few questions about the show, directing, and what the audiences will get out of the show!

Yanik first appeared on the Kaleidoscope stage in 2003 as Mr. Tumnus in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. He also played Jaffar in Disney’s Aladdin Jr. in 2007 and Orin the Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors (2015). Yanik has been Music Director for many Kaleidoscope productions including Disney’s Aladdin Jr., The Adams Family, Singin’ in the Rain, The Rocky Horror Show, Hair, and  Little Shop of Horrors.

What sort of person is going to LOVE this show?

I think this production is the perfect holiday outing for families to come and experience theatre all together!

What has been challenging about bringing this script to life?

We have a big cast and we have to make sure that all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. Large casts are great, it allows us to have that many more people sharing the stage and the experience, but that requires a little bit more work.

Why did you want to music direct this story?

I grew up watching Pippi’s stories on television in the 80s (yes, way back then!) and so, thought it would be fun to revisit that character with the younger generation.

What do you want audience members to think about in the car as they drive home after this show?

I’d like them to remember the fun moments straight out of Pippi’s imagination, her determination to face obstacles and her joie de vivre!

If you had a magic wand and could music direct any other show tomorrow, what would it be?

There is a newer musical I just discovered not a long time ago called Amelie, based on the french movie of the same name. It is the beautiful story of a girl dreaming all sorts of things in her head, influenced by the people she’s observing around her, and wanting to connect with these people and make her world a better place.

Thanks Yanik! Come see Pippi Longstocking: The Family Musical at the McPherson Playhouse December 28-30, 2018.
